Hypertension ? Blood Pressure readings 148/74?

speedwing Asked: Hypertension ? Blood Pressure readings 148/74?

I am a man and I am 67 years of age. I went to the my surgery a few days ago and my blood pressure reading was 148/74. I was told by the nurse that my BP was too high and I need to watch my diet to keep it under control. I was told by the nurse that I cannot reduce my BP reading because the " damage had already been done " and the best I can do was to maintain it at this current reading. I have always believed that a change in diet, ie. reduction of salt intake, exercise, weight reduction and reduce caffeine would bring down ones BP. I have also been told that eating bananas is another way to reduce BP because of the high potassium in bananas. Can someone clarify ?

have your cholesterol checked too, it plays a part. there are meds that can help reduce it.

That reading is a lot less than what I would think of as being high for your age. You need to talk to a Doc, Iwould keep a record of the readings by either going to a place that has the free check machines like a drug store. Then take these readings which will vary by time of day and other factors to your Doc.Take as much info about the time and what you were eating prior to the readings to your Doc.
I would not worry, I think the nurse is to conservative on this, but do go to a Doc to verify.
